Dear Explorers and Friends,
College athletics has officially entered a new and unprecedented era. At the beginning of June, the settlement of a landmark lawsuit, House v. NCAA, received final approval. The outcome now allows schools to directly compensate student-athletes for the first time and to require all Division I institutions to provide backpay for missed Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities dating back to 2016.
La Salle had two choices: to opt in (and abide by the terms of the settlement for revenue sharing and roster limits) or opt out (and abide by existing NCAA rules for scholarship limits and potential competitive disadvantages).
After careful consideration, La Salle University has chosen to opt into the settlement, joining our peers across Division I and the Atlantic 10 Conference. This decision reflects our strong commitment to our student-athletes and our belief in the evolving role of college athletics. It positions us to compete boldly in this changing landscape while continuing to support our values and mission.
Most importantly, no current La Salle student-athlete will lose their opportunity to compete due to new roster rules set by the settlement. We remain committed to enhancing the student-athlete experience—in competition, in the classroom, and in our community. That includes continued investment in facilities such as the newly renovated John E. Glaser Arena and forthcoming upgrades to various locker rooms, playing surfaces, and scoreboards.
I invite you to read more about La Salle's decision and other aspects of the settlement, as well as how you can support La Salle Athletics through the newly established tax-deductible Explorer Athletic Excellence Fund, and help us ensure that we are fulfilling our goal of competitive excellence.
Also, give a listen to the Trustees + Presidents: Managing College Athletics podcast where I discuss this issue and more.
Thank you for being a part of our journey. With your support, we are building a bright, sustainable future for La Salle Athletics—one that reflects the changing nature of college sports and our unwavering Explorer spirit.
Sincerely,
Daniel J. Allen, Ph.D.
President, La Salle University
